‘Epitome’ is part of a series of photographs names ‘Traveller or Tourist’, mainly shot in Morocco. The name of this work, ‘Epitome’, comes from a passage from Paul Bowles’ The Sheltering Sky. This book resonated with Batton as it is about travellers, like herself, in Morocco. The passage from this book seemed relevant to the works she was creating at the time:

“And it occurred to him that a walk through the countryside was a sort of epitome of the passage through life itself. One never took the time to savor the details; one said: another day, but always with the hidden knowledge that each day was unique and final, that there never would be a return, another time.”
